Serve at Spring Heights – Sarah’s Testimony!

By WVUMC News

Making disciples, growing leaders, changing the world- one camper at a time.

Part of what I love about camp ministry is that its impact is far-reaching. Campers are changed when they encounter Christ at camp, and summer staff and volunteers grow as leaders when they are allowed to serve. We could tell you why you should work at camp, but our past team does a far better job!

In seminary, I was recently assigned a spiritual mapping exercise to chart my journey with spirituality, religion, and the sacred. As I sit and reflect, Spring Heights is a high point on my map for experiencing the sacred. Each night we gathered campers in family groups for evening devotions. We closed with three questions: what was your high moment of the day, what was your low moment of the day, and where did you see God today? These are sometimes difficult questions for campers at the beginning of the week, particularly new campers, since they are not used to paying attention to those things throughout their day. As the week goes on, those questions get easier to answer. Campers start looking for God.

As a seminary student, I have been told again and again that there is a direct connection between my spiritual health and how I will be able to show up for others and lead. Spring Heights taught me spiritual leadership as I learned to name God in the small moments of each day. I saw God in the sunrise as I fed horses, the joy of campers running to the cross and back, friendships being made, and watching as campers claimed their faith. Spring Heights shaped me as a leader because I learned to listen to God, and it’s where I heard my call to ministry. Working at camp allows you to grow closer to God and listen in new ways; I hope you’ll take the chance to listen to God this summer.
