Too Busy to be Whole…Preparing for A Day Apart

By Jonothan Nettles

As I look at the upcoming combined Order of Deacons and Order of Elders Day Apart on September 27, I can’t help but think of all the things that need done. In “Soul Keeping” John Ortberg shares a Dallas Willard quote regarding spiritual health: “You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” I remind myself that this gathering is not the hurry I need to eliminate, but rather a life-giving time of renewal that I desperately need.

The last Day Apart on April 19 was a blessing on several levels. Bishop Sandra reminded us of the need to connect with each other on a deeper level. I realized that the times together are few, and it takes great intentionality to move to a deeper level in our relationships with each other.

The excuse that keeps me from this is often busyness, but my soul cries out for deeper connections with my brothers and sisters and I’ve come to learn that we really do need each other. Darick and Cindy Biondi led us in music, and Carolyn Nettles shared several creative avenues for spiritual formation. I tend to shy away from creative activities at times, as I feel a need to get it right. Surprisingly, when I let go of my need to control, I find that God often speaks in ways I may normally block.

Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball will be with us next week as we explore wholeness. The Orders will have time together and time alone, and it’s a great opportunity for connection and renewal. I am working at eliminating hurry, but this is something I need and look forward to, and I hope to see you there!
