Introducing The Shepherd’s Fund

By Joe Webb

West Virginia Annual Conference Treasurer and Conference Board of Pensions Executive Secretary James M. Berner has announced a new opportunity for retirees, spouses, and widow(er)s who may encounter a health crisis.

Thanks to a new partnership with a generous supporter, The Shepherd’s Fund now offers a safety net that enables retired ministers and their spouses to receive up to $10,000 each year to help with bills and other financial concerns related to many different types of health crises.

According to a letter from Berner to retirees, “Often, after retirement, our retirees have small savings and few resources to help in case of a crisis situation. Even those who were able to set aside funds for the retirement years may be facing large medical expenses, or other expenses due to paying for medical needs. We desperately do not want this to happen to our faithful servants!”

The Shepherd’s Fund provides a private, confidential way for retirees to receive financial care. Applications are available from the Conference Treasurer’s Office and may be submitted by the person in need, an immediate family member, or a District Superintendent.
