Words of Hope from Bishop Sandra

By Sandra Steiner Ball

Just when things seem like they cannot get more chaotic, they do. We are amid things that are beyond our understanding. The world, our nation, is full of division and pain. Events are taking place that have never taken place before.

We feel the pain; we wrestle with the confusion and fear; we do not understand people’s actions and words; and we cry out! Words escape us!

What is happening at the Capital is pure chaos. We look for wisdom. We want to pray for our leaders, for those who traveled to our nation’s Capital today and have entered the Capital.

However, we don’t know what to do or exactly how to pray – except maybe to utter the words, “Christ have mercy.” In the midst of this place the words of Romans 8:26 – 27 ring in my ears:

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

These hard times are an opportunity that can bring us closer to God. The writer of Romans reminds us that in the midst of chaos we can draw near to God. The Spirit will pray with and for us.

God is present even in the chaos working to bring transformation in the midst of division, to bring healing in the midst of physical, emotional, and spiritual pain, and to bring new life even amid the brokenness. The way may be unclear and uneasy but rest assured that we are not alone, God is with us.

May we open ourselves up to the movement of God’s Spirit in our lives so that the Spirit might show us how to be the presence of Christ, the hope of Christ, the comfort of Christ, the light and love of Christ in these troubled times.
