Calling all West Virginia United Methodists! It’s time to live into our Appalachian heritage and do some quilt making!

The West Virginia Conference Justice and Advocacy Committee is sponsoring the creation of a quilt that will be a physical representation of the link between the United Methodist Sacraments of Baptism and Communion and social justice issues facing our world today. The committee believes that our faith calls us to continue Jesus’s work of healing and liberation. This quilt uses an art form familiar to Appalachians to remind us of our mission as Christians and United Methodists. 

The quilt will be displayed at the Conference office. A journey of the quilt across the Conference may be in the future.

The center panel of the quilt (see below) will be surrounded by blocks depicting various social justice issues. At this time, the J&A committee needs the help of quilters and those handy with a needle to create blocks for the quilt. Ideas, patterns and fabric can be obtained from BA Miskowiec, who developed the center panel of the quilt. 

Since the completed quilt will be presented at Annual Conference in June 2023, we have about five months for the creation of approximately 12 blocks. The center panel is 17” x 40”, with a 1 ½ inch border. We are looking for blocks nine inches (9”) square. Some blocks will have scripture embroidered on them (by hand or machine). 

You may use any colors you wish for the blocks. But before you start sewing, please contact BA for design approval. You may purchase your own fabric or take advantage of the donation of about two dozen fat quarters in any color imaginable.
